Why “Follow Your Passion” Is Incomplete Career Advice
Mar 26, 2026
One of the most common pieces of advice people hear when thinking about their careers is simple:
“Follow your passion.”
It sounds inspiring. But in many cases, it’s incomplete advice.
I recently talked about this idea during a conversation on the Embrace the Squiggle podcast.

During our discussion, we explored a key idea that sits at the center of my upcoming book, Find Your X Factor: Follow Your Personal Treasure Map to Purpose.
The truth is that passion alone rarely leads to lasting fulfillment.
Passion Without Ability Creates Frustration
When people pursue something they love but lack the skills or aptitude to do it well, frustration often follows.
They may enjoy the idea of the work, but they struggle to create impact or see meaningful progress.
Eventually the passion fades.
Ability Without Passion Creates Burnout
The opposite problem is just as common.
Many people become highly skilled at work they don’t truly enjoy. They succeed professionally but feel drained by what they do every day.
Over time, that misalignment can lead to burnout.
The Real Secret: Alignment
The real breakthrough happens when two forces come together:
-
Your interests and passions
-
Your skills and abilities
When these intersect, people discover where they can do their best work and contribute at their highest level.
That intersection is what I call your X Factor.
If you’re thinking about your career direction, ask yourself two simple questions:
-
What truly energizes me?
-
What am I genuinely capable of doing well?
Where those answers overlap, you may be closer to finding your X Factor than you think.
