I learned an unexpected lesson from my sliding glass door recently

alignment leadership life lessons professional development May 24, 2026

For months, it had been getting harder and harder to open. I was convinced the rollers at the bottom were worn out. I researched parts, watched videos, and prepared for a major repair project.

Then a guy who really understood these doors came over.

He looked at it and in less than five minutes put two screws into the top of the door, and suddenly it glided open perfectly.

That was it.

He explained that over time, as a house settles, pressure shifts in ways you can’t easily see. The pressure had pushed the door out of alignment.

And honestly… that sounds a lot like life.

In my upcoming book, Find Your X Factor, I talk about how the pressures of adulthood — careers, bills, expectations, responsibilities, supporting a family — can slowly push us out of alignment too.

We can end up stuck in work that drains us instead of fulfills us. Trapped in routines that no longer fit who we are. Pushing harder and harder on doors that no longer open easily.

But most times the answer isn’t blowing up your whole life or starting over completely.

Sometimes the “slight adjustment” is finally being honest about what gives you energy instead of draining it. It’s making time again for gifts and passions you’ve ignored. It’s shifting your focus toward work that better matches your natural abilities. It’s saying yes to something you’ve been afraid to pursue — or no to something that’s been pulling you away from who you really are.

Small adjustments.
Big difference.

That’s what Find Your X Factor is really about: getting back into alignment between your passion, abilities, and purpose so the door to your future starts opening more smoothly again. ✨
