Frequently
Asked Questions
What an X Factor is, how to find yours, and what to do when what you are good at and what you enjoy have stopped pointing the same way.
The basics
Three questionsWhat is an X Factor?
Your X Factor is the intersection of your interests and abilities: what you enjoy doing and what you can do well. Finding that intersection can help you make choices about your work, leadership, and life with greater clarity and purpose.
Is my X Factor the same as my passion?
Passion is part of it, but passion alone is not the whole picture. Your X Factor also takes your abilities into account. The aim is to find work and activities that interest you and give you a chance to make a strong contribution.
Who created the Find Your X Factor framework?
Paul Comfort created the Find Your X Factor career and purpose framework. He explains it in his book, Find Your X Factor: Follow Your Personal Treasure Map to Purpose.
What is the X Factor Map?
The X Factor Map is a way to look at your interests and abilities together. It helps you consider where you are now and where those two qualities might align more closely.
Plot what you love against what you are good at, and four very different places appear. Three of them quietly drain a life. One of them is your X Factor.

Three questionsWhat if I'm good at my job but don't enjoy it?
That may be a sign that your abilities and interests are out of alignment. You do not have to make an immediate career change. Start by identifying which parts of your work energize you, then look for opportunities to do more of them. Volunteering for a project or trying a new responsibility can help you test a different direction.
What if I love something but I'm not good at it yet?
Interest can be a reason to learn. Ask whether you want to develop the ability and whether you enjoy the work of improving. You can explore an interest without expecting it to become your career immediately.
Do I have to change jobs to find my X Factor?
No. You may find a better fit by changing how you use your abilities in your current role, pursuing a project that interests you, developing a skill, or exploring an opportunity outside work. Sometimes a small adjustment is the right first step.
Getting started
Four questionsHow do I find my X Factor?
Begin by listing what energizes you and what you do well. Look for patterns in the work you enjoy, the problems you like solving, the skills people rely on you for, and the experiences that have been most meaningful to you. Where your interests and abilities meet, you may find a clue to your X Factor. The free assessment can help you begin: findyourxfactor.ai/assessment.
Who is Find Your X Factor for?
The book is for people who want more clarity about their direction, whether they are beginning a career, succeeding in work that no longer feels fulfilling, considering a change, or helping others grow. The upcoming course takes the same framework further and guides you through the work step by step.
Can my X Factor change over time?
Your interests, abilities, and circumstances can develop over time. It is useful to revisit the questions as you gain experience and learn more about yourself.
